Briefs: Arlington Hts. reopens renovated park
The Arlington Heights Park District is hosting an open house for the newly renovated Sunset Meadows Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. The event is free and open to the public and will include games, a raffle and golf contest. Sunset's renovation includes a new building, parking lot, one-mile walking trail and playground. Sunset Meadows is at Wilke and Kirchoff Roads in Arlington Heights. The park entrance is off Dwyer Avenue.
Wheeling Relay is tonight
The annual Relay for Life at Wheeling High School will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday and end at 6 a.m. Sunday. More than 600 cancer survivors, family and friends are expected to be at the event, which opens with a ceremony and a Survivors' Victory Lap. The Luminaria Ceremony will be at 10 p.m., and the Fight Back Ceremony at 10:30 p.m. The high school is at 900 Elmhurst Road, Wheeling. Win or lose, BHS rally is on
Barrington High School will celebrate its girls softball team's trip to the state tournament at noon Sunday at the Field of Dreams complex at the school, 616 W. Main St. A short parade will start at the fire station on Northwest Highway and continue on to Lake Cook Road and down to the high school. A rally for the team will follow the parade.
BG police net state award
The Buffalo Grove Police Department was awarded first place in the 2007 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge championship. The department also received two awards for speed awareness and bicycle/pedestrian safety. The program judges law enforcement agencies across the state on its policies, training, public information and enforcement. Las year, the Buffalo Grove department won the top prize among departments with 51 to 100 officers. This year, it competed in the "championship class," which pits past winners against one another. The traffic unit has received 30 state and national awards in the past decade.
Korean Baptist invites all
Korean Baptist Church of Schaumburg, 316 N. Springinsguth Road, will host its first Korean Cultural Festival from noon to 3 p.m. today. The event is intended as a show of appreciation to the community as the church celebrates its 30th anniversary at its present location. It will showcase Korean food, music and clothing as well other aspects of Korean culture, including a tae kwon do demonstration. There will also be games and activities for kids.
