Lake Villa holds eighth Celebration of Summer

Lake Villa has planned a lineup to help welcome summer including food, music, games and boating - using cardboard boats, of course.

The village's eighth annual Celebration of Summer will run through Sunday at Lehmann Park on the west side of Cedar Avenue between Route 83 and Grand Avenue across the street from the Metra station.

The celebration began with the play in the park Thursday night, presented by students from Palombi Middle School in Lake Villa.

Teens ages 11 to 16 will be invited to be entertained during teen night from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight.

The evening will include free carnival rides and games and free sports events including dodge ball, basketball and volleyball tournaments, sponsored by the Lake Villa Park and Recreation Department and 5 Star Sports. Preregister a team by calling Coach Mike Mazur at (847) 627-0800. Security will be provided through the night by the Lake Villa Police Department.

Carnival rides and games will kick off Saturday's activities at 5 p.m. "World Class Noise", a Chicago band that plays classic, contemporary and original rock and soul music will begin performing at 6 p.m. and will lead into the fireworks display at dusk.

The celebration will conclude Sunday starting with the Kroozers Fun Run car show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winners of the car show will be announced at 3 p.m. Also on Sunday, there will be carnival games and rides from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a public safety fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Metra parking lot.

Later that day, watch cardboard hit the water as the village holds its annual cardboard boat races. Entrants will begin to build their boats using cardboard and creativity starting at 11 a.m. The races will start at 1 p.m. Those who attend teen night on Friday may begin building their boat that night.

Admission to join the race is $8 if registered in advance or $10 the day of the race. Boat kits will be available for $15.

Food will be available to purchase from Grande Jakes, Scott Dogs and Backstage Grill Friday through Sunday.
