100 garages open for business
With thousands of visitors expected from near and far for the Timbercrest and Woods subdivisions' 39th annual garage sale this weekend, why not take advantage of being among the near?
More than 100 households are expected to participate in this year's event, which runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The subdivisions themselves are just behind Town Square, south of Schaumburg Road, west of Roselle Road and north of Weathersfield Way.
People have been known to drive from out of state to get in early on the bargains and rare items for sale in the neighborhood. But residents from Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates can easily get there just as early without spending a fortune on gas.
Organizer Rich Gerber said some of this year's rarer items include a 1974 Corvette, 1965 Harley-Davidson, antique furniture, record albums including 78s, a home theater system, handmade quilts, air hockey table, ATV and accordion.
In fact, the items available are sure to be enough to start a new home, Gerber said.
Young voices wanted: The Schaumburg Township District Library board is accepting applications for a couple student trustees to join it from Sept. 1 to Aug. 1, 2009.
Applications for the student advisory trustee positions are available at the Information-Magazines Desk on the second floor of the central library at 130 S. Roselle Road or online at www.stdl.org/teenpage.asp.
Students must be 15 to 20 years old and reside in the library district to be eligible.
Those accepted will participate in local government by attending board meetings and providing ideas for ways the library can better serve young people.
Student advisory trustees will also be required to attend occasional programs, then provide written feedback to their board and staff liaisons.
In appreciation for their work, the student trustees will receive a library card free of fines during their term and a gift certificate to the library cafe.
Further questions about this volunteer position can be sent to the library's teen coordinator Amy Alessio at aalessio@stdl.org.
Tennis Across America: For the third straight year, Schaumburg Tennis Plus will host the 19th Annual U.S. Professional Tennis Association Tennis Across America.
Under the direction of Umang Chadda, a recognized tennis instructor, a free clinic will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday to introduce tennis to players of all ages and ability.
In addition, STP will introduce its newest tennis program for youngsters, called the Quick Start Junior Tennis Program, which debuts this fall. Using special equipment, the program focuses on teaching children up to age 9 how to rally the ball.
