Get a taste of rowing Sunday in Crystal Lake
What sport takes the most physical conditioning and mental strength? Some say it's rowing. If you want a taste of this amazing sport, visit the Crystal Lake Rowing Club at the Main Beach Park from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Crystal Lake Rowing Club is hosting the local celebration and has several exciting activities for the public.
High-tech boats called shells will be on display; the ergometers (indoor rowing machines) will be available to try; and you can even get a ride in a rowing shell on Crystal Lake. More than 100 clubs across the United States are expected to participate in this eighth annual event, which is sponsored by USRowing and Concept 2, a manufacturer of rowing oars and ergometers.
Rowing is an Olympic sport and one that is gaining in popularity across the U.S. High school and college teams race in spring and fall, and rowers of all ages can compete or simply row for enjoyment and fitness.
Crystal Lake Rowing Club has a junior team with high school students from Crystal Lake, Barrington and Woodstock participating.
The Crystal Lake Rowing Club, an affiliate of the Crystal Lake Park District, offers Learn to Row classes for adults and juniors. Contact the club at the Web site, www.crystallakerowing.org, for details.
