Peterson, Fillies driven to succeed

Perry Peterson's day was far from over after his team won Saturday's Class 4A sectional softball final 10-3 over Carmel.

He hopped in his jeep and drove to DeKalb.

The Barrington coach made a video tape of Northern Illinois's Mary B. Bell Softball Field in late afternoon and will provide his girls a presentation of the college diamond this morning at the Fillies' 8 a.m. practice.

"I just want the team to have some familiarity to the field when they get on it (Monday)," Peterson said. "I want them to be comfortable with their surroundings."

The Fillies (29-6) will meet Crystal Lake South (18-13) at 4:30 p.m. Monday for the championship of the Elgin supersectional, being held at NIU.

The Gators defeated South Elgin 1-0 in the championship of the Machesney Park Harlem sectional final Saturday when Gina DeFano belted a nearly 320-foot line drive inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Gators senior pitcher Jessica Gable (11-11) had an ERA of 1.64 going into Saturday's game with 122 strikeouts.

CLS had a team batting average of .268, led by junior Emily Mahoney (.315) and Vicki Pyan (. 281, 15 RBI).

The Gators won their first sectional in school history.

Barrington has won six under Peterson in his 16 seasons directing the Fillies program.
