Men armed with golf club rob woman in Schaumburg

Two men -- one armed with a golf club -- robbed a woman while her infant son sat in her SUV near Schaumburg Golf Club, police say.

The woman's brother-in-law chased the robbers away, but not before they smashed the woman's car window with the golf club and took $70, Schaumburg police said.

The culprits remain at large Thursday, five days after the theft. Police have no adequate description to go on, Sgt. John Nebl said.

According to police reports, the men approached the woman around 10:50 p.m. in the golf club parking lot on the 700 block of Lakeland Drive. The woman had just placed her son in the rear passenger's side of her 2006 Honda Element, police said. The men demanded money, and one grabbed the woman by her shirt collar.

After she reached into her wallet, the victim's brother-in-law arrived and tackled one of the robbers, police said.

One of them swung the golf club at the brother-in-law, who managed to avoid the blow, which instead ended up smashing the Honda's window, police said.

The man with the club ran west into the cul-de-sac of Mariner Point, while the brother-in-law struggled with the second robber. But the brother-in-law slipped and hit the back of his head on the pavement, which allowed the other robber to escape, police said.
