Gavin students' walk will benefit cancer research
Gavin students, school officials and community members will walk Saturday to help fight cancer.
"Walk Strong to Make Life Long" is set for 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Forest Preserve, Shelter A, near Wauconda. The forest preserve is on Route 176, just west of Fairfield Road.
Organizer Mike Filipowicz, who teaches seventh-grade math at Gavin South Junior High, said this is the event's second year, but the first time it's being used to raise money for cancer research.
Each year, organizers determine what charity is in need of money, based on the needs of a student from one of the Gavin Elementary District 37 schools, Filipowicz said.
Last year, participants raised $3,000 for cystic fibrosis in honor of a student suffering from the disease.
"We want this to grow and be an event the community can wrap their arms around," he said. "But, also, it really teaches students leadership qualities because they need to go out and get sponsors. Also, it teaches them community service by raising awareness and doing something for someone in need."
The event is expected to draw about 100 students and adults from District 37. All of the registered walkers have raised money and pledges with a goal of collecting $3,500.
"This isn't a traditional walk where people show up, walk, and then it's over," Filipowicz said. "This is an all-day event where people can come out for different activities and walk the course at their leisure."
The event is open to the public.
He said there will be refreshments in the morning, and a grilled lunch served about 11:30 a.m.. The cost of burgers and hot dogs will be about $1, he added, just enough to recoup the cost of the food.
There will also be games and other activities. He said the walk will be performed whenever people feel the urge to take the hike.
