Buy a mosquito net to help combat malaria in Africa

Laurie Studdard of the Elburn and Countryside Community Center is offering residents a chance to help combat malaria by donating a mosquito net for a family in Africa.

Studdard heard about the program "Nothing But Nets" at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora.

"I'm trying to get my own team together through the community center," Studdard said. "Children are dying from malaria (which is carried by mosquitoes). It's terrible to think that they can't even sleep peacefully.

"I know people can feel overwhelmed with all the requests for donations, but $10 buys the net, which is treated to keep away the mosquitoes, and also pays for someone to train the family in setting it up. No one has to ship anything."

Studdard hopes to have $500 donated in her name and that of the community center.

Donations can be made online at its Web site: www.nothingbutnets.net.

Children's Music Theatre

Meanwhile, the Elburn Community Center is accepting registration for the annual Children's Music Theatre Workshop, which is directed by Rita Johnson. Classes will be held from 6:15 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, beginning June 19. The workshop is open to children between 4 and 12, or to a child who has just finished sixth grade.

Students will learn songs, choreography and be coached in how to have stage presence. The goal is to have each child experience the joy of singing and performing on stage. The theme is "Unsung Heroes" in honor of local firemen, police and servicemen and women.

Cost is $45 per child. Each child will receive a T-shirt and a rehearsal CD. The public will be invited to a final performance at 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at the center, 525 N. Main St. in Elburn.

Tickets for that performance will be $8 for adults and $5 for children, students through high school and senior citizens.
