Area seniors receive scholarships; Weber awarded for karate feats

The following high school seniors have been awarded a Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship, for the 2008-09 academic year: Danielle Iannarelli of Bartlett, Medinah Country Club, University of Illinois; Luke Liu of Hoffman Estates, Inverness Country Club, Northwestern University; Neil Patel of Schaumburg, River Forest, James B. Conant High School, Purdue University; and Christopher Pomagier of Schaumburg Medinah Country Club, Northern Illinois University.

• Seventh Degree Black Belt Richard Weber of Barrington was inducted into the Illinois State Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Weber, the owner of Parallax Metals Inc., Barrington, was a nationally rated karate tournament kata competitor in the 1970s. He has won tournaments throughout the Midwest and has taught karate at the Chicago Judo and Karate Center and later at Olympic Karate Studio in Burbank.

He was one of the trainers of World Cruiserweight Kickboxing Champion Rob Salazar and has promoted several nationally televised kickboxing cards. Weber has also been active in the sport of kickboxing for more than two decades as a judge and referee.

• The Schaumburg Township Council of PTAs announced the following 2008 scholarship recipients:

The Bonnie Greenberg Memorial Scholarship: Andrew Mueller (Collins, Frost, Conant).

Two-year Junior College/Trade or Vocational School Scholarship: Daniel Bartnicki (Lincoln, Prairie, Hoffman Estates).

Four-year College or University: Gina Cannistra (Nerge, Mead, Conant); Tiffany Hwang (Einstein, Addams, Hoffman Estates); Christina Bartoszewski (Churchill, Eisenhower, Hoffman Estates); Hilary Dietz (Hoover, Keller, Schaumburg); Emily Cason (Hoover, Keller, Schaumburg); Brittany Calendo (MacArthur, Eisenhower, Hoffman Estates); Ashley Darnall (Dooley, Addams, Schaumburg) Susan Liu (Churchill, Eisenhower, Hoffman Estates); Matthew Bauer (Blackwell, Dooley, Addams, Schaumburg); and Michelle Stanbary (Armstrong, Eisenhower, Hoffman Estates)

The students were awarded a one-year, $1,500 scholarship during the annual Schaumburg Township Council Scholarship Recognition dinner held May 14 at Mead Junior High School in Elk Grove Village.

The recipients, all high school seniors, previously attended a District 54 school.
