Fire damages Schaumburg condo

A passer-by spotted smoke coming from a condominium on the second floor of a building at 32 Azalea Drive in Schaumburg Saturday afternoon.

When fire fighters arrived, the unit was filled with fire and smoke and crews determined no one was home, Schaumburg Battalion Chief Michael Diafera said. It took about 20 minutes to control the fire, and they had to break down the door of a neighboring condominium to help remove a physically disabled neighbor. She was not injured.

Diafera said damage was estimated at about $100,000 and an investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
