St. Xavier deserves kudos for courage
In their decision (in April) to close the campus, St. Xavier University officials showed extraordinary courage as they placed human life at a higher priority than fear of being accused of over-reacting and inconveniencing people.
They were doing their best to prevent a tragedy pursuant to the two threats of violence scrawled on a bathroom stall in St. Xavier's Regina Hall.
St. Xavier officials and campus police were working closely with the Chicago Police Department and the FBI to determine whether the threats are real or a hoax.
While they were doing so, their concern for those who must leave campus is obvious as the school was buying some students plane tickets and giving others gas money, so they can easily get home.
We could not ask for a better scenario after all the recent tragedies from which, until now, no one seemed to have learned a thing.
St. Xavier officials set an example and precedent for officials of other schools who will find themselves hesitating to take such precautions in similar cases.
To close the school and thereby remove any potential victims from the paths of those with bad intentions is a brave act worthy of commendation.
