Electoral College a brilliant concept
Kevin Martin (Fence Post, Saturday) informs us that he read with amusement my response to his view of the Electoral College.
It is always gratifying to bring a note of cheer to someone. I accept Mr. Martin's compliment.
Nonetheless, I repeat that I believe the Electoral College is a brilliant and ingenious instrument devised by the framers of our magnificent Constitution. If it were entirely useless, it would have been swept away years ago.
Some presidents won the Electoral vote but received fewer popular votes than another candidate. Disappointing to the loser and those who voted for him? Of course.
But when that occurs, those who supported the newly elected president think the Electoral College is just fine at that moment. Pardon the pun, it all depends on whose ox is gored.
Martin says I have disdain for some presidents. Not true. Dislike in some instances, but not disdain. I respect the office no matter who occupies it.
If Sen. Hillary Clinton were to win the presidency, I would be thankful because this would be a better country by its recognition of the equality of women.
Anyhow, those who dislike the Electoral College are predominantly Democrats and liberals.
That doesn't make them bad persons, but they should respect the wisdom of the founding fathers, which permits the voters to organize movements to amend the Constitution.
So get busy, Mr. Martin. Join a group whose purpose is to abolish the Electoral College. Tempus fugit.
