GOP wants tax holiday

House Republicans are calling for a suspension of the Illinois sales tax on gasoline this summer. Lawmakers claim the average family would save up to $60 over a four-month tax holiday. Truckers might save $1,000. State revenues would drop by roughly $200 million at a time when the budget is already out of balance. But supporters say the tax break would help stimulate the economy. Republican lawmakers are calling on Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan to allow a vote on their idea. Illinois approved a similar tax holiday in 2000 when gas prices topped $2 a gallon. It was never clear how much that translated into savings for consumers.
