Mundelein 2, Lakes 1
Kim Carroll has found many ways to score goals this season. But a crucial one in the final minute of the Class AA regional final topped all the others.
Carroll's game-winning goal lifted top-seeded Mundelein past No. 8 Lakes Friday night in Lake Villa, 2-1.
Mundelein (16-2-4) will next play McHenry at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Mundelein sectional semifinal at Libertyville High School. No. 12 McHenry shut out No. 13 Richmond Burton 1-0 to win the Marian Central regional on Friday afternoon.
Ashley Begrowicz flicked the ball to Carroll, who collected it and scored with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
"I was so excited and it was a perfect way to end the game," said Carroll, a junior who has 15 goals. "I placed it in the right corner and the keeper (Jessica Schroeder) couldn't get to it. I was nervous at first and thought the keeper would get there and it went in."
Mundelein had a tough time dealing with the much-improved Eagles (13-9-1) and searched to find a way to break them down.
"Lakes was dominating on their counters and is very dangerous," Mundelein coach Dave Ekstrom said. "We played with a lot of poise. A win is a win and we move on to the sectional."
Mundelein's Courtney Bestler scored the first goal five minutes into the game off of a Jennifer Miranda assist.
Lakes tied the game early in the second half in the 47th minute of play. Sophie Khawaja lofted a ball over the Mundelein defense. Alex Neal made a run beating two defenders and slotted the ball past Mustangs' keeper Nikki Allen.
The Eagles stayed in the game down to the final minute and had their chances until Mundelein scored the big goal.
"Mundelein is a good team and moved the ball," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said, "Give them credit for the win.
"We held them off and got opportunities to tie and a chance to win. Our girls came a long way this season."
