Pick up bargains at city garage sale

Des Plaines' 4th Annual Citywide Community Garage Sale continues with residents in ZIP code 60018 having their garage sales today through Sunday. Residents living in 60016 had their sale earlier in the month.

A rain date has been scheduled for May 30 to June 1. This is a voluntary event and garage sale permits will be waived for these designated dates only. Residents will be able to display items for sale on front lawns and/or driveways from 9 a.m. to sunset. Residents may choose to participate for one, two or three days.

Residents may donate items to charities such as Purple Heart Veterans, (708) 396-8990, AMVETS, (708)-388-7800 or Salvation Army, (888) 5-PICK-UP. Items for disposal must be removed until scheduled refuse collection day. Call (847) 391-5464 for more information.

Chamber hosts success dinner

The Rolling Meadows Chamber of Commerce will host its Circle of Success Dinner starting at 6 p.m. May 29; The Meadow Club, 2950 W. Golf Road, Rolling Meadows. Today is the last day to register. The dinner will honor several community leaders who have given their time and energy over the years. Tickets: $60 per person; $440 for a table of eight. (847) 398-3730.

Public works to show what they do

The Arlington Heights Public Works Department is hosting an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at the L.A. Hanson Center, 222 N. Ridge Ave. The open house celebrates National Public Works Week, May 18-24, which includes the theme of "The Future is Now."

The department will provide demonstrations of complex equipment and will offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the basic services public works provides on a daily basis such as the handling of the village's water supply, sewer collection and street maintenance.

Spring band concert Tuesday

Elk Grove High School's Spring Band Concert will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, in the school theater, 500 W. Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove Village. Featured on the program will be the concert and symphonic bands. Selections include "Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons," "Two Slavonic Dances," "Ghost Train" and "Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn."

PHS orchestra, chorus will perform

The Prospect High School Music Department presents its spring orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, in the school cafeteria, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect. This concert features the symphony and chamber orchestras, senior violinists Katy McGehee and Sarah Struebing.

The program will include: "Selections from West Side Story," the finale from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and Concerto in E minor by Mendelssohn. Tickets are $8 at the door. Call the orchestra office at (847) 718-5435.

The school's Choral Department will present its Spring Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the school cafeteria. The program will include a full spectrum of music, from classical pieces to musical theater and pop. Admission is free. Call (847) 718-5370.
