Two students arrested in Waubonsie Valley HS bomb threat

Two Waubonsie Valley students were arrested and charged Tuesday at the Aurora high school after allegedly scrawling bomb threats last Thursday on bathroom stalls, authorities said.

Aurora police said they charged two girls -- both 16 -- with making a terrorist threat and criminal defacement of state-supported property. Both are felonies.

A third girl, also 16, was arrested but released without being charged.

Police said the girls -- all from Naperville -- wrote threats on two bathroom stalls that referenced plans to blow up the high school today.

Police said the girls apparently made the threats so they wouldn't have to attend classes.

Police said they received an anonymous tip Tuesday that led to the identification of the girls. The three are seen on a video shot from the school's surveillance system leaving the women's bathroom simultaneously on the day the threats were discovered.

Principal Jim Schmid said several students came forward with information after he made an all-school announcement about the situation and asked anyone with information to assist the investigation.

"We were able to take that information, put several pieces together and we determined the best way to proceed from there," Schmid said. "We are grateful for the combined efforts of our student body, our deans and staff members, and the Aurora Police Department for their efforts in apprehending the suspects who were allegedly involved in the incident."

Schmid would not provide any information about the students.

He said the suspects will have to pay the consequences according to the school's handbook policy, based on the results of a district investigation. He said he is unaware if the district will be in a position to press additional charges against the students.

"I don't know that yet, so we'll be discussing that and determining the best way to move forward," he said. "We hope to have those things sorted out in the coming days."

Schmid said he's confident the situation has been fully resolved. Nevertheless, additional security measures will remain in place throughout the day today and any students' absences will be excused.

"We're still making that option available to them, but we obviously hope they don't make that decision," he said.
