Wrap: Wave opens with win

St. Edward's girls soccer team opened the postseason Tuesday with a 6-0 win over Luther North in the quarterfinals of the Class A Westminster Christian sectional.

Alex Rubio nabbed a pair of goals and a pair off assists to lead the Green Wave (9-8-2) on offense. Bridget Cholewa added two knocks of her own. With single goals, Katy Lally and Caroline Boye extended the St. Edward lead. Bianca Ramirez and Brittany Brozek each contributed with assists.

Taylor Hunsberger was in goal for the Green Wave, who will face North Shore Country Day at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the sectional semifinals.

Boys volleyball

Elgin d. South Elgin: Ryan Johnson (16 kills), Ivan Ceballos (31 assists), Francisco Vega (6 digs) and Eric Brandenburg (12 kills) led Elgin (5-20, 2-8) to this Upstate Eight Conference win over South Elgin (8-19, 2-7). The Maroons won in three games by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-18.

"Our intensity level on the court was the reason for this turnaround," said Elgin coach Keith Foster. "We played as a team, and the guys were having fun on the court."

South Elgin had solid efforts from Tony Thomas (8 kills, 4 digs), Jim McMahon (8 kills, 2 digs), Akash Patel (5 kills, 9 digs) Kevin Mui (8 digs) and Robbie Vasquez (7 digs, 24 assists).

Larkin d. St. Charles East: Behind key play from Brendyn Dobbeck (2 aces, 4 kills, 18 assists, 2 blocks), Brad Potts (8 kills), Joe Leganski (4 kills), Mike Jetel (4 kills, 3 blocks) and Daniel Dominguez (3 aces, 3 digs, 2 kills), Larkin walked away with this Upstate Eight Conference win. The Royals stayed on top of the Saints by scores of 27-25 and 25-19.

Bartlett d. Streamwood: Taking the Sabres in two games (25-11, 25-14), Bartlett improved to 15-10 overall and 6-2 in Upstate Eight Conference play. Leading court efforts were Chris Guimon (7 kills, 2 aces), Ryan Lynch (15 digs, 3 aces), Jason Theobald (22 assists) and John Campolo (ace, 5 kills).
