MedCare sets free skin cancer screens
According to the American Cancer Society, most of the more than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosed yearly in the United States are considered to be sun-related.
Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, accounted for more than 65,000 cases of skin cancer in 2007 and most -- about 8,000 of the 12,000 deaths -- are due to skin cancer each year.
Come in and get a free skin cancer screening from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Provena St. Joseph Hospital MedCare, 2250 W. Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills.
A second screening will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon June 14 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center, 77 N. Airlite St., Elgin.
Appointments are required and spaces will fill up quickly. To make your reservation, call (847) 931-1800, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Stiller performance is canceled
Due to unforeseen circumstances, "An Evening with Jerry Stiller" at the Hemmens Cultural Center at 8 p.m. May 23 has been canceled.
Stiller's appearance will not be rescheduled. Patrons who have already purchased tickets will, at their choosing, receive either a refund or credit toward future Hemmens Cultural Center Season shows. The cancellation brings the Hemmens' 2007-08 season to an early end; its last performance was Sarah Vowell on March 21.
The Hemmens 2008-09 season will be announced June 23 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. July 8. Patrons who have purchased tickets in the past and gave their address will be mailed a brochure. Those wishing to be added to the Hemmens' mailing list may call the Hemmens Box Office at (847) 931-5900.
