Power outage, evacuation at Central DuPage Hospital

Power was knocked out at Central DuPage Hospital for part of the day Friday, and an overheated computer monitor led to an evacuation of an office building on the Winfield hospital's campus.

Construction crews were digging near the hospital's loading dock and maternity pavilion at 9:40 a.m. when they hit a power line, knocking out power to the main hospital, Central DuPage spokeswoman Amy Jo Steinbruecker said.

The hospital remained on backup power until shortly before 2 p.m. as hospital officials enacted a disaster safety plan.

While surgery was stopped during the outage, the patients' safety was not at risk, and no patients had to be moved, Steinbruecker said.

Firefighters responded at 10:45 a.m. to reports of a burning odor coming from a five-story hospital office building. The building was evacuated for part of the morning.

Winfield Deputy Fire Protection District Chief Bryan Lewis said crews found a burned out computer monitor on the second floor of the building that apparently had overheated from an electrical surge.

"We were there for all of 10 minutes," Lewis said. "It wasn't a big deal."

No one was injured during either incident.
