Hoffman finally finds way past Fremd

Hoffman Estates picked the right time to finally beat Fremd in boys water polo.

Justin Simanis scored 4 goals and Jeff Skalon scored 3 goals as the fifth-seeded Hawks topped fourth-seeded Fremd in Wednesday's sectional quarterfinal at Hoffman.

Hoffman lost to Fremd 18-9 in last year's quarterfinals and 12-11 in triple overtime and 7-6 this season.

Hoffman will play in Friday's 4:30 p.m. semifinal against top-seeded MSL champion Conant (26-4-1).

The Cougars won their 17th in a row as Chris Emery scored 4 goals in a 14-9 win over No. 8 Palatine. Brad Ferris scored 3 goals for the Pirates.

Second-seed Schaumburg edged No. 7 Rolling Meadows in a wild 18-17 double-overtime game. Chris Corbett scored 6 goals for the Saxons and Stephen Gerbatsch and Luke Shafer scored 5 goals apiece for the Mustangs.

Schaumburg will play in Friday's 5:45 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 Barrington, which got 5 goals from Mike Byron in a 16-7 win over No. 6 Buffalo Grove. Matt Cooney had 3 goals for the Bison.

At Glenbrook North, fifth-seed New Trier avenged a 5-goal regular-season loss a month ago with an 8-7 win over No. 4 Prospect. No. 7 Wheeling fell to No. 2 Loyola 18-7.
