Two Aurora residents held in shooting
Two Aurora residents are being held in the Kane County Correctional Center on $1 million bond each in connection with a Sunday night shooting that injured a 34-year man, police said Wednesday.
Dwayne Shipp, 36, of the 100 block of Creston Court, and Valerie A. Carpenter, 46, of the 400 block of North Lake, have been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said Shipp and Carpenter have a personal relationship and are accused of conspiring to lure the victim, who previously had a relationship with Carpenter, to her apartment where Shipp was supposed to threaten and batter him.
When Carpenter and the victim arrived at her apartment about 11:15 p.m., Shipp appeared from a hallway armed with a gun, and confronted the victim in the living room, police said.
According to police, Shipp and the victim fought for the gun before the victim was able to leave the apartment, run downstairs and call police from his cell phone.
Ferrelli said Shipp then ran out of the apartment to Lake Street and fired several shots at the victim, hitting him at least once in the leg.
Shipp then continued west on Williams Street, eluding arrest by the time responding police units arrived.
In an effort to take Shipp into custody, Aurora police set up surveillance on two west side addresses he was known to frequent. At 11:30 p.m. Monday, he was seen getting into a vehicle with three other people on the 200 block of West Illinois Avenue.
When officers stopped the car near Highland Avenue and West Indian Trail, they found a loaded handgun near Shipp's seat, along with some cocaine and spent shell casings, police said. As a result, Shipp was charged with single counts of armed violence, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The three others in the vehicle were released without charges.
Both Shipp and Carpenter are next scheduled to appear in court on May 22 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.
The victim was treated at an Aurora hospital for non-life-threatening wounds.
