Wrap: Augustana next stop for DeSimone

Brian DeSimone toyed with the idea of walking on to play college basketball at a Division I school.

But the Buffalo Grove star guard and honorary captain of the Daily Herald Cook County All-Area boys basketball team decided smaller was a better route.

DeSimone, who helped BG to four 20-win seasons and three regional titles, chose Division III power Augustana College in Rock Island to continue his basketball career.

All-Area teammate Mike Ricciardi has decided to play at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Ricciardi's dad Frank also played basketball and baseball at IIT.

Prospect all-area guard Jeff Heiden selected Wisconsin-LaCrosse and teammate Alex Toth will play at Washington University in St. Louis, which won the Division III national championship.

Football

Rolling Meadows all-area linebacker Kelly Jauch and all-area receiver-defensive back-kicker-punter Kevin Serna will face each other in the CCIW. Jauch committed to Carthage and Serna to Augustana.

Meadows offensive lineman Nick Strzelecki committed to I-AA Valparaiso. Defensive back-receiver Scott Wenzel will also play in the CCIW at Illinois Wesleyan.

Hersey was in an unfamiliar position as it trailed the Mid-Suburban League crossover at halftime on 2 goals by Hoffman's Chrissy Tooren.

But the East champion Huskies (14-2-4, 8-1-2) rallied for the 3-2 victory as Jackie Drees scored 2 goals and Kathryn Korff connected of Kristen Gierman's 14th assist.
