Booden, McDowell fire back-to-back no-hitters

Did Zion-Benton's baseball team get any hits against Libertyville on Saturday?

No and no.

Libertyville managed to pull off back-to-back no-hitters in a pair of North Suburban Conference Lake Division victories, 4-0 and 18-1.

The games marked the final two for Libertyville (16-9) in division play. The Wildcats finished 7-5 in the NSC Lake.

In the first game, Jacob Booden threw his second no-hitter of the season by rolling up 12 strikeouts.

In Game 2, Brooks McDowell threw 8 strikeouts and gave up only 1 walk for his no-hitter.

Libertyville rolled up 14 hits. Lee Gough led the way with a grand slam. Tim Matheson also added a homer.

Meanwhile, Tom Jacobson went 2-for-3 and Chase Guarnaccio added a double.

Lake Zurich sweeps: Ricky Erickson saved the day for Lake Zurich.

The relief pitcher finished off Lake Forest twice on Saturday, getting 2 saves in the process as the Bears won both games of a North Suburban Lake Division doubleheader, 9-2, 9-3.

Lake Zurich is now 18-5 on the season and 7-2 in division play.

In the first game, winning pitcher Dan Zummo went 6 innings and rolled up 7 strikeouts. He issued just 1 walk.

Erickson pitched the seventh inning and gave up 1 hit.

Offensively, the Bears got 3 hits out of Zummo and 2 hits apiece from Austin Schmiesser, Steve Cleary and Corey Halicke.

Zummo had 2 doubles.

In the second game, winning pitcher Ryan Morrill went 4¿ innings before Erickson entered in the fifth.

Erickson got 3 strikeouts and gave up no walks over the next 2½ innings.

Offensively, Joey DeBernardis led the way for Lake Zurich with 2 hits, including a double.

Vernon Hills 4, Lakes 2: The conditions -- cold and rainy -- weren't good on Saturday.

But Brad Schnitzer was.

The Vernon Hills pitcher threw a complete game 2-hitter, fired off 9 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs to lead his team to the North Suburban Prairie Division victory.

Schnitzer also helped his cause by going 2-for-3 with a double.

Teammate Nick Mazza also went 2-for-3 with a double.

Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed due to the weather.

Warren 8, Antioch 3: Warren rolled up 12 hits and scored 5 runs over the final three innings to get the North Suburban crossover victory.

Jim Fracek led Antioch (10-9) with a home run.

Libertyville 25, Medford 3: On Friday night, Libertyville cruised to a big victory over Medford of Wisconsin at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

The Wildcats finished with 26 hits and were out to a 10-0 lead after they batted in the top of the second inning.

Tim Matheson and Lucas Guarnaccio each had 3 hits while Joey Aiello and Lee Gough each had a pair.

Matheson, Guarnaccio and Jeremy Butler each had a double and a triple, while Aiello had a double and 2 triples.

Softball

Lake Zurich sweeps: Lake Zurich stayed perfect in North Suburban Conference Lake Division play with a 4-1, 5-0 sweep of Lake Forest.

In the first game, Lake Zurich (18-3, 9-0), got 3 hits from Coryn Schmit, including a double and a triple.

Kim Lacke added 2 hits and drove in 2 runs.

Pitcher Katie Buczynski pitched 5 innings for the Bears and rolled up 9 strikeouts. She gave up only 1 hit and 1 walk.

Stephanie Hoff got the save, pitching 2 innings in relief.

In the second game, Buczynski again got the win. This time, she went the distance and racked up 10 strikeouts while allowing just 1 hit and no walks.

Offensively, Lake Zurich got 2 hits out of both Ella Aslan and Kyra Boyer.

Libertyville gets swept: Zion-Benton barely won and then won big against Libertyville on Saturday.

The Zee-Bees earned a 1-0 and 8-1 victory in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division doubleheader.

In the first game, Zion-Benton held the Wildcats to just 2 hits -- a double by Ali Haws and a single by Katie Larson.

The Wildcats wasted an 8-strikeout performance by pitcher Danielle Kazcmar.

In the second game, Zion-Benton pounded out 13 hits and put together a 4-run fifth inning.

This time, Libertyville's bats were working better as Larson, Toni Kintzel and Megan Wood each had 2 hits.

Larson drove in Libertyville's only run.

The Wildcats drop to 10-12, 3-8 on the season.

Boys volleyball

At Glenbrook North: Stevenson took third place at the Glenbrook North Invitational, going 3-2 on the day.

The Patriots are 17-13 overall.

Stevenson defeated Oak Park River Forest (27-26, 25-14), Nazareth (25-15, 25-23) and York (25-1, 21-25, 25-15) but lost to Glenbrook North (20-25, 16-25) and Barrington (23-25, 25-14, 19-25).

Matt Ockrim led the way for Stevenson with 29 kills while Brad Feiger added 23 and Drew Vravick, Bryan Kessler and Kyle Buck had 19, 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

Harrison Kay led the Patriots defense with 43 digs while Brad Feiger added 22.

Meanwhile, Stevenson setter Jason Giecek rolled up 108 assists.

At Prospect: Libertyville finished second, defeating St. Charles North (25-16, 25-19), Hoffman Estates (25-21, 25-15) and Larkin (25-23, 25-19).

Girls lacrosse

Lake Zurich wins twice: The Bears got two wins on Saturday, defeating Fremd 9-3 and Stevenson 10-9.

Against Fremd, Mary Handrahan and Chelsea Williams had 3 goals each. Handrahan also had 2 assists.

Meanwhile, goalie Janalyn Tasch rolled up 10 saves for the Bears.

Against Stevenson, Sarah Hernandez led the way with 4 goals. Handrahan added 2 goals and 4 assists.

Tasch had a stunning 24 saves.

Girls soccer

Glenbrook North 1, Mundelein 0: The Mustangs fell to 10-2-3 with the nonconference loss.
