Wrap: Burlington Central 5, Streamwood 1

Thanks to a 5-1 win over Streamwood (6-11-3) and a 0-0 tie with Sycamore on Friday, girls soccer tournament host Burlington Central will advance to the championship match against Kaneland today at 1 p.m. The Rockets edged out Sycamore in the tiebreaker, scoring one more goal than them to earn the title-game appearance.

With a pair of goals, Karly Kuranda led the Rockets offense. Bri Conran added a goal and 2 assists. Erica Heissler (assist) and Bekah Haberkost each scored single knocks for Burlington (7-7-1) in the 5-1 win over the Sabres.

Kim DeRaedt had a big day in the net, recording 6 saves against Streamwood. DeRaedt went on to preserve a shutout against Sycamore with 18 stops.

The lone Streamwood goal came from Lonnie Prout assisted by Alanah Thompson. Pearl Patel was in the net for Streamwood, recording 7 saves against the Rockets, and also nabbed 6 saves in a 4-0 Streamwood loss to Sycamore.

Elgin Academy 8, Rockford Christian Life 1: With a pair of goals from both Lauren Steimle and Kate Burnham, Elgin Academy (7-7) nabbed this nonconference win easy. Adding single goals were Alyssa Pena, Kristen Cella, Amanda Flanigan and Allison Clark. Both Burnham and Steimle also assisted on 2 goals, while Cella recorded 1 assist. In the Hilltopper net, Bianca Swegler blocked 10 shots.

Bartlett 4, Oswego East 3: Bartlett (7-4-2) improved to 2-0 in the Bartlett Tournament with this 1-goal win over Oswego East. Scoreless at the half, the Hawks got 2 goals from Abbi Glaser to end the game. Prior to Abbi's pair, Michelle Glaser and Fran Abate had both recorded unassisted goals. Keeper Erin Zaidman defended the net for Bartlett tallying 5 saves.

"It was a great win for our seniors on senior night," said Hawks coach Heather Thomas.

Softball

Burlington Central 11, Winnebago 0: Burlington Central (17-1) capped off a 17-hit day with a 5-run seventh inning to beat Winnebago in nonconference action. Leading plate efforts were Kayla Oranger (3-for-5, 3 runs, RBI), Ashley Scheffler (2-for-3, HR, 4 RBI, run), Brooke Porto (3-for-4, 2b, 3 runs) and Erica Maisto (4-for-4, run, 2 RBI).

Maisto was inside the circle for the win, fanning 10 of 24 batters faced allowing no runs on 2 hits.

Boys track

At ISL Meet: With 33 points, Elgin Academy finished sixth overall at the Independent School League track meet just one point behind F. W. Parker, who took fifth with 34 points. Lake Forest Academy won with 177 points followed by North Shore Country Day with a 154 combined score.

Steven Farbota had a big day for the Hilltoppers, winning the 110 high hurdles with a 17.9, taking fourth in the 400-meter run (55.6) and also finishing sixth in the long jump with a 17-foot-7 inch jump.

"Steven had a phenomenal meet," said coach Bill Harris.

Teammate Joe Kozlowicz finished fourth in the same event with an 18-6. Kozlowicz also earned fifth place honors in the 300 hurdles with a 46.1, and teammate Dan Vecchiola collected a 24.8 in the 200.

Earning a third place overall finish in the discus was Drew Stuart with a toss of 37 feet, 2 inches.

Elgin Academy also saw success in relay events. In the 400 relay, Farbota, Stuart, Kozlowicz and Dan Vecchiola finished fourth as a team with a 46.9, while John Lucas, Steve Maas, Chris Morrow and Pax Kelly collected a time of 2:12 in the 800 relay.

"We saw best efforts of the year by all," Harris said.

Girls track

At ISL Meet: Competing in the Independent School League Meet at Lake Forest Academy, Elgin Academy finished fifth overall with 29 team points. University High earned championship honors with 170 points followed by Lake Forest Academy (110) and North Shore Country Day (80).

Sarah Parker led Hilltopper efforts by winning the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 9 inches, and taking fourth in the 200-meter run with a time of 30.2.

Parker also ran with the 400 relay team which earned fifth place honors with a time of 1:01.4. Parker was joined by Eleanna Mathioudis, Erin Kenney and Neha Khemani.

The same foursome completed the 800 relay in 2:11.

Finishing fifth in the 1,600 relay, Mathioudis, Khemani, Maddie Stone and Karen Darling collected a time of 5:26.

"We were pleased with everyone's efforts," said coach Bill Harris. "Sarah (Parker) had an outstanding meet."

Thursday's results

At Big Northern Conference Meet: With 85 points, Burlington Central finished second as a team in the Big Northern Conference Meet only bettered by event host, Byron who won the meet with 120 points.

Booking first place conclusions in both the 800-meter run and 1,600 meter run with times of 2:21.42 and 5:25.99 respectively, Maggie Gannon led the Rocket push. Vanessa Perez won the 300 meter hurdles at 46.61.

In relay action, Burlington earned a first in the 3,200 behind the legs of Meghann Thommes, Hannah Williams, Rachael Latham and Katie Puccio who finished with a time of 9:58.39 to boot the previous meet record from 2002 of 9:59.00.

Earning third-place finishes in both the shot put (34-11) and discus (101-10) was BC's Karolynn Bush. Emily Zipoy took third overall in the 3,200-meter run at 11:43.23 followed closely by Hampshire's Holly Plichta, who finished at 11:51.12.

The Whip-Purs took 10th as a team with 14 points.

College baseball

Judson loses to Purdue-North Central: Appearing in their first-ever CCAC Tournament Championship game, Judson University fell to host Purdue-North Central, 20-7, in a nine-inning game in Westville, Ind. Both teams will play for the CCAC Tournament Championship today at noon. The winner of the game will receive the at-large bid to the NAIA Region VII Tournament to be played May 6-9 in St. Francis, Illinois.

The loss was the first for Judson in the tournament as they defeated Olivet Nazarene, 6-2, and Purdue-North Central, 9-7, on Thursday.

With the loss, Judson is now 17-23. They are playing for their first-ever bid to the NAIA Regional Tournament as no Judson baseball team has played in the NAIA Region VII Tournament.

Alci Gonzales received the loss.
