Kudos for police response to cougar
Wild cougar in populated neighborhood. It is very idealistic to want to preserve and protect of such a magnificent animal as this cougar roaming highly populated Chicago neighborhoods.
Realistically, the cougar is a carnivore hunting for food by instinct -- perhaps not intentionally preying on humans, but they have been known to randomly attack.
I commend the Chicago police officers for assessing the potential imminent serious danger to citizens.
The animal was located and identified but not restrained or restricted in any way from continuing the hunt for food.
With its strength and agility, it could have then eluded authorities for a long time. The decision to end the threat was a good judgment call.
Had the cougar been allowed to leave the site and later preyed on a human or animal in the neighborhood, there would have been quite an outcry of police negligence. I am amazed that this is a controversial issue.
It is certainly disappointing to see this magnificent animal put down.
I would hope the next time this situation arises, our law enforcement officers will respond in the same way.
