Pro to join Prospect jazz concert

Renowned musician Steve Turre, a trombonist with the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984, will perform with the Prospect High School Jazz Ensembles Tuesday at the school's spring jazz concert.

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the school theater, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect.

According to Patrick O'Connor, coordinator of fine and performing arts and director of jazz at Prospect, Turre is one of the world's best-known and most accomplished jazz innovators and trombonists and is also well-known for playing seashells. A native of San Francisco, he has released several award-winning CDs and has performed with such artists as Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Max Roach.

Having such an accomplished artist perform with a high school ensemble is quite impressive and is sure to be one of the students' fondest memories.

The concert will feature the Jazz Ensembles I and II and Knight Voices, the vocal jazz ensemble.

Tickets are expected to sell out quickly. They are now on sale for $15. To reserve your ticket, contact O'Connor at (847) 718-5435. For more information about the concert, visit prospectfinearts.com or steveturre.com.

Snuggle for Mom, Help for History: Remember last Christmas when Millie's Hallmark and Neat N Cool Gifts sold penguins to raise money for the Mount Prospect Food Pantry? Well, the owners, Bob Dooley and Bill Reddy -- who have consolidated their retail efforts into one operation at 1024 S. Elmhurst Road -- are now trying to help another local cause.

They're selling Snuggle teddy bears made by Gund for Mother's Day to help the Mount Prospect Historical Society raise funds to restore the Central School.

The 11½-inch Snuggle Bear, complete with its own "Personalized No. 1 Mom Certificate," is identical to the well-recognized Snuggle Bear in TV commercials. It is now available for $15 at Millie's Hallmark.

"For the past four years the society has been focused on raising funds to move the Central School to the Historical Society location on South Maple Street," said Gavin W. Kleespies, executive director of the society. "With the move fast approaching, the focus has shifted to raising funds for the restoration of the Central School building at its new location."

For more information, call Reddy at (847) 593-8288.

Mother's Day Diaper Drive: ReMax Suburban broker Joanie Schwarzbeck is sponsoring a diaper drive to benefit the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago in memory of her own mother who was active in the society for years.
