Northbound Route 59 closed after concrete walls fall off truck

A stretch of northbound Route 59 in West Chicago was closed for four hours Thursday morning after concrete walls fell onto the road.

About 7:15 a.m., two 12-by-40-foot concrete walls fell off a truck at Route 59 and Hawthorne Lane.

West Chicago police Sgt. Leo Aviles said the walls landed on two nearby cars as the truck came to a stop at the intersection.

"Apparently somebody had improperly secured the load and the weight shifted as the truck came to a stop," Aviles said.

The two damaged vehicles had to be towed from the scene, but Aviles said nobody was injured during the incident. The truck driver wasn't ticketed by police.

Northbound Route 59 was closed between Hawthorne and James Avenue for about four hours as emergency crews worked to clear the intersection.

Route 59 was reopened about 11:15 a.m., Aviles said.

A crane was used to pick up the walls and reload them onto the truck, officials said.
