Hockey
State quarterfinals: After 35 victories and one of the best seasons in team history, Stevenson Patriots junior varsity hockey team's season ended with a 2-1 loss to the Neuqua Valley Wildcats in double overtime in the quarterfinals of the Illinois State High School Championship.
At the end of two tense periods, neither team had scored. The goaltending of Mitch Levinson and strong play by the entire team kept Neuqua Valley off the scoreboard. Neuqua Valley had a two-man advantage for a minute and 15 seconds at the beginning of the second period, but defensive play by Nick Fasano and Max Mora, and forechecking by Gordon Ochi prevented them from scoring.
With less than eight minutes to play, Justin Krupp scored for a 1-0 lead. With four minutes to play, Myles Lobus had a wrist shot from 10 feet out, but Neuqua's goalie, Austin Woeste, made the save.
With 2:40 to play, Neuqua Valley got an opening when Stevenson was called for tripping. With just under a minute to play, one of Stevenson's forwards lost his stick allowing Neuqua defenseman Keith Paulson an uncontested shot from the right point. The shot was on net and tied the game with 53 seconds to play. At the end of regulation the game remained tied at 1-1.
In overtime, Mora's slap shot from the right point was deflected just wide and Jake Scott and Justin One just missed putting rebounds into the net. Levinson made several saves at Stevenson's end of the ice, and the game remained tied at the end of the first 10-minute overtime.
With 4½ minutes left in the second overtime, the teams lined up for a faceoff in Stevenson's zone just to Levinson's right. When the puck was dropped both centers fought for it. Paulson shot the puck to Levinson's far side for his second goal, which ended the Patriots' season for a state championship with a 2-1 loss.
The Patriots finished second in Metro North, winning the winter holiday tournament, and made great runs in the Metro and State playoffs.
