Briefs: Day care in Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills will get a new day-care facility after village board trustees overruled the planning and zoning commission. The village board informally agreed last week to allow the Goddard School to build a facility in the Aspen Pointe shopping center, south of Route 60. The planning and zoning board recommended against three measures regarding the school. Part of the opposition was because the approved site plan for Aspen Pointe called for an office building. Some plan commissioners initially did not support the original Aspen Point project. "This use will work there. It will be successful there," said John Kalmar, assistant village manger. The village board agreed, voting 5-0 to allow the use. Goddard will offer pre-school and kindergarten for up to 140 students. Tuition will range from $950 to $1,200 per month.

Science contest winner

Wright Junior High School's Science Olympiad team recently won first place among 15 junior high schools at the regional tournament at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. This was the third consecutive year the team took first at the regional tournament and the first year in which each team member received a medal in at least one event. The Lincolnshire school team advances to the state competition, Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

Concert at library
