Briefs: ECC team places first
After a first-place win in the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association Regional College Bowl tournament, Elgin Community College's team will compete for the state championship on Friday at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills. The college bowl is an academic trivia bee consisting of various subjects in college-level courses. Team members include Steve Krull of Elgin, Tristan Angulo of Carpentersville, Courtney Hamill of Streamwood, Arezou Kashani of Algonquin and Charles Gorman of St. Charles.
Explore big trucks
Children and adults are invited to attend the Fox Valley Park District's Fly-A-Kite, Touch-A-Truck & Ride-A-Bike celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora. Attendees can climb a fire engine, explore a police car and observe other large vehicles. Kites will be available to the first 50 children who arrive. Swanberg Road to close
Swanberg Road in Campton Township will be closed for repairs beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday. The road is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
Senior breakfast Tuesday
The St. Charles Park District will have a breakfast for senior citizens Tuesday at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. Admission is free for Adult Activity Club members and 75 cents for visitors. Breakfast includes omelets, doughnuts, coffee and juice. There also will be prizes. This event is open to residents ages 50 and older. Call (630) 584-1055.
Decoy collectors' show
Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles will host the National Antique Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show Friday and April 26. Among the items on display will be antique Canadian decoys. There also will be seminars for beginner and longtime collectors. The show is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Retiring chief honored
An open house honoring retired Aurora Police Chief William Powell will be May 7 at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. The festivities will run from 3 to 8 p.m. and include presentations from federal, state and area law enforcement agencies. Powell was appointed chief in November 2005. A Chicago native, Powell, 56, joined the department in December 1977. He was promoted to sergeant in 1993; lieutenant in 2000; and commander in 2005.
