Goodbye, sergeant. Welcome, sergeant.
Glendale Heights said goodbye to a long-time police sergeant Thursday night and welcomed in another -- its first female supervisor.
Sgt. Mark Hartigan is retiring after 25 years at the department and Glendale Heights Police Officer Sherry Baley is stepping into his job.
She was sworn into the sergeant's position at the village board meeting.
Baley joined the department in 1989 and has worked in patrol, accident investigations, as a juvenile officer and as a detective, Police Chief Mike Marron said. She recently was credited with helping save a life, and her work on a murder investigation earned her accolades, he said.
Her predecessor, Hartigan, had a seven-year head start on her in the department -- joining in 1982 and moving up to the rank of sergeant in 1989.
"We're going to miss you," Village President Linda Jackson said, presenting Hartigan a watch.
That drew quite a chuckle from the white-haired officer.
"How ironic, after missing all those deadlines, I got a watch as a gift," Hartigan joked.
He said that while many facets of the job have changed over the years -- like the change from writing all police reports by hand to having all patrol cars equipped with computers -- some things remain the same.
"One constant is the dedication and professionalism you've demonstrated each and every day," he said.
Then he ended his speech the same way he said he concluded his daily roll call for "umpteen years out there."
"Let's rock and roll."
He got a standing round of applause -- the first of the night. Baley's came close on its heels.
