Rosary 8, St. Francis 0
Kylie Schalz couldn't lie -- she sensed something special in the air Wednesday.
Like she'd been here before.
Two days after twirling her first career perfect game, Rosary's senior matched the feat with an 8-0 no-no of St. Francis in Wheaton.
"I didn't know I had it the first game," Schalz said, "then this time I was like 'oh my God, I'm going to pee my pants. I knew going into the seventh I had it going."
Schalz (3-2) struck out 13 on Monday against Montini; this time she fanned nine, all swinging and five of them on changeups.
"She worked very hard in the off-season," Rosary coach Tara Tattersall said, "and she was in this morning throwing before school. She's very dedicated and very focused. You can't ask for much more.
"What's different this year is we have solid defense behind her. It takes a lot of pressure off the pitcher when you know you don't have to strike everybody out."
St. Francis coach Ralph Remus said Schalz has grown as a pitcher since his team first faced her two years ago.
"I think she has a better command of her pitches than we've seen in the past," Remus said. "Her control is a little sharper. She obviously had confidence in all of her pitches."
"The movement on my pitches is a lot better now," Schalz said.
Rosary wasted little time giving Schalz a cushion she didn't much need. Brenda Rocha and Lauren Contorno reached on bunt singles to lead off the first, and Schalz and Colleen VanBogaert drove them in with hits.
Rosary led 3-0 after the first, and VanBogaert's 2-run homer to right in the third made it 6-0. The blast, VanBogaert's first of the season, came on an 0-2 count.
"I've been struggling a lot lately. I'm sick of it," VanBogaert said. "I wanted to get out of that slump. I just decided to relax and hit it."
VanBogaert went 2-for-2 and reached base all four times and Schalz 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. Rocha, Contorno and Andrea Deking each added 2 hits for Rosary (4-5, 3-0 Suburban Catholic Conference).
"We're for real. I keep telling the girls that," Tattersall said. "People need to pay attention."
For St. Francis (5-5, 2-1) Taylor Ronchetto threw three scoreless innings after coming on in relief in the fourth before being touched for two runs in the seventh.
