Dust off your golf game at charity fundraiser
If ever there was a winter which caused us to really appreciate the warmer days of spring, this was it.
So the opportunity to get out on the golf course and dust off your game must be particularly sweet to golf enthusiasts.
The Northwest Suburban United Way is presenting its 12th annual United Way Golf Classic in memory of George Gattas, former athletic director at Prospect High School and long-time community volunteer, on April 30 at the Mount Prospect Golf Club. The event and dinner following are sponsored this year by Northwest Community Hospital.
Three scholarships will be awarded in Gattas' name at the dinner.
"George touched the lives of so many people," said Marcia McMahon, United Way chapter's chief professional officer. "He was instrumental in starting the United Way Youth Commission and organized a United Way marathon where residents would run for fun throughout our community. United Way is proud to continue that tradition of caring through the United Way George Gattas Scholarship."
The classic will feature a shotgun start and scramble format. Reservation forms are at uwnorthwest.org or by calling (847) 768-1074.

'Fortune du Pot': In case you don't speak French, that is what you call a potluck dinner in our Sister City of Sevres, France. And the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission will be holding one at 6:30 p.m. April 24 in the Mount Prospect Village Hall Community Center, 50 S. Emerson St., to celebrate the village's association with Sevres.
All residents are invited to attend and bring a dish to share (entree, salad or dessert). French recipes are encouraged, but not required. You are also welcome to bring wine to share. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.
Exchange students from Sevres will be on hand to socialize with members of the community. Also, Ralph Wilder and Allan Keye will play a French medley on the clarinet and piano and a group of students from Prospect High School will share photos from their trip to Sevres and commission members will share photos from a trip to Brittany, Normandy and Sevres last fall.
There will also be a display of the quilts that members of Mount Prospect's "Sew Bee It" quilters sent to Sevres last fall for a joint exhibit with Sevres' quilting group, the "Patchworkers." One of the French group's quilts will also be displayed.
Reservations are required; call (847) 392-6000.
