Child starts small fire in Port Barrington
A child playing with a lighter started a fire in a bedroom of a Port Barrington home Tuesday evening, fire officials said. Wauconda Fire District firefighters were called to 532 Normandy Lane at 7:31 p.m. after receiving a 911 call, Wauconda Fire Capt. Joe Arizzi said. The 4-year-old boy was playing with a lighter that did not have a child-safety lock on it. Fortunately, the child became scared when he saw the fire and ran downstairs to tell his parents, Arizzi said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire in the corner of the second-floor bedroom. The loss was estimated at around $10,000, but no one was injured. "A lot of times children will hide because they are scared or they don't want to tell their parents," Arizzi said. "They were very fortunate."
