Big grab lifts Barrington
Barrington's freshman center fielder played the most important fly ball of her career as if she was a four-year varsity softball player at the position.
With the game on the line, Colleen Shandley calmly backpedaled on sophomore Tess Dinterman's towering drive and made the catch near the 200-foot fence to save Barrington's 6-5 victory over Fremd on Monday in Palatine.
The two teams are now tied for first in the Mid-Suburban West with 3-1 records.
Shandley's catch came with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Vikings (6-1) rallied in the sixth with 3 runs after trailing 6-2 after 3 innings.
Dinterman's blast was on a 3-0 delivery from Barrington ace Kim Cygan (12-2).
"Thank God for Colleen" Cygan said.
"It was just a 'natural instinct' reaction," said Shandley about her game-winning gab. "I knew it was make or break. If I catch it, we win. If I don't, we lose."
Dinterman had singled one inning earlier when the Vikings pulled to within 6-5.
"The swing felt really good," she said of her final at-bat. "I was hoping it was gone. We fought hard the whole game. We'll have to be ready for the next time we play."
Fremd coach Jim Weaver wasn't sure if Cygan was pitching around Dinterman because first base was open.
"I have confidence in the way she swings the bat and Tess couldn't have put a much better swing on that ball she hit," he said. "We made a nice comeback.
"I thought we had them at the end but we didn't execute when we had one out and runners on second and third. I'm happy with how we fought back. Hopefully, we'll learn from out mistakes and get better."
Barrington coach Perry Peterson was hoping his team would learn from its mistakes, too.
The Fillies (12-2) committed 6 errors.
"I was satisfied on the offensive end," Peterson said. "As for the defense, I saw something I am not familiar with and we have to go back to the practice field and work on that."
Cygan's 2-run double and Jessica McGurn's sacrifice fly to center gave the Fillies a 3-0 in the top of the first.
Lauren Zaworski's RBI single to right center made it 3-1 in the bottom half.
The Fillies added 2 more runs in the second on Lisa Shandley's RBI fielder's choice and Michal Jane Maropis' RBI groundout.
They went ahead 6-1 in the third on Lindsey Dulla's slap infield single which brought home Kristin Kuhn (single).
Kelly Voigt's RBI single made it 6-2 in the bottom of third. The Vikings got 3 in the sixth, including a 2-run single by Alexa Cinquegrani.
