Mr. President, don't build this wall
I was dismayed to read that waivers, authorized by Congress, allowed our president to bypass 30 laws and regulations to speed up the building of a 670-mile fence along our southwest border. Why are we as a nation not outraged over this travesty? We have always been the country that tears down walls, not builds them. And let's not delude ourselves by calling it a fence to make it sound less offensive. It is a wall.
Have we become so disconnected from our American values the past seven years of this president's administration, with its attack on individual freedoms and abuse of power, that we have lost sight of our values and our sense of what America stands for?
It will be a sad but foreseeable irony when someday a world leader will visit this great country of ours and paraphrase the famous quote by President Reagan by saying to our president, the leader of the free world, "Mr. President, tear down this wall".
