Your vote counts at pizza contest
The Elk Grove Jaycees will host a pizza contest from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Holiday Inn Elk Grove, Busse and Landmeier Road. Cost is $5; free for kids 5 and younger. Music and a raffle will benefit Kenneth Young Center's Walk for the Mental Health of It. kennethyoung.org.
Des Plaines of '30s star of new play
"Rise and Shine," a new play written and directed by Dan Scott of Des Plaines, will be presented by the Des Plaines Historical at 8 p.m. Fridays, 7 p.m. Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through April 27 at the Fisher-Wright House, 815 Center St., Des Plaines. "Rise and Shine" chronicles the struggles of a Des Plaines family during the Great Depression and their attempts to rise above their lot. Tickets cost $15 for adults for the evening performances and $13 for afternoon. Student and senior tickets cost $13 for evening and $11 for afternoon. Reservations are required. Call (847) 391-5399.
See what it's worth at appraisal show
The Des Plaines Lions Club will host an antiques appraisal show featuring local appraiser Karl Gates from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, 766 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines. Cost for the event is $10 and the first 75 people with paid reservations may bring an item for appraisal. Additional items may be appraised for $5 each, time permitting. No weapons, coins or stamps allowed. The event is based on the popular Public Television program "The Antique Roadshow." Proceeds will aid the blind and hearing impaired.
