Richards hoops it up in Portsmouth showcase event

The end of Davidson's dramatic NCAA tournament run wasn't the end of Jason Richards' hoops fun.

The 2004 Barrington graduate and two-time Daily Herald All-Area pick played this weekend in the prestigious 56th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Virginia.

The tournament is a showcase for 64 college seniors before NBA and European professional scouts. It's the only tournament for college seniors to be evaluated by NBA scouts prior to the NBA's pre-draft camp in Orlando.

Richards, a 6-foot-2 guard who was this season's leader in assists in Division I, played three games this weekend. On Saturday, he had 10 points, 5 rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes.

On Friday, Richards had 5 points, 6 assists and 2 rebounds in 19 minutes. And in his first game, Richards had 5 assists, 2 steals and 3 rebounds in 24 minutes.

Pheteau to St. Francis: Rolling Meadows senior Stan Pheteau, a Daily Herald All-Area football pick, has accepted a scholarship to the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Pheteau was recruited as a cornerback and slot-blocking wide receiver by St. Francis, an NAIA school. Pheteau helped Meadows earn a share of the Mid-Suburban East title and reach the second round of the Class 7A state playoffs, where he broke his ankle.

Pheteau returned to action during the basketball season and is at full strength again.

Harper record-breakers: Two Harper College track and field school records fell last weekend in the Chicagoland Championships at North Central College.

Tabitha Thomas ran 40:43.72 in the 10K to break a 10-year old school mark. Roosevelt Dardon broke a two-year old record in the triple jump with a 46-0¾. Dardon also hit 22-4 in the long jump.

Ray Richardson (50.25) and Ryan Massey (50.76) also became national qualifiers in the 400 meters.

Harper winter MVPs: Harper College announced its winter sports Most Valuable Players at its postseason banquet this week.

Schaumburg graduate Bobby Rhodes was the men's basketball MVP. Barrington graduate Jenny Murray and Prospect graduate Larissa Coldebella shared the honors in women's basketball.

Alex Delonis was the wrestling MVP.
