Wayne Twp. planning to replace bridge

Wayne Township officials are planning to start rebuilding a flood-prone stretch of St. Charles Road in West Chicago in the next few weeks.

The township will spend $1.27 million to replace a culvert and build a bridge over a roughly quarter-mile stretch of the road, located just north of North Avenue between Anderson Court and Morningside Avenue.

Highway commissioner Ken Spitz said the township hasn't yet set a start date for construction to begin. The project should take four months to complete.

The section of road will be closed during much of the construction.

"No, it won't look like the Golden Gate Bridge," Spitz said. "But the new bridge will be a huge improvement."

Township officials said funding problems and regulatory reviews have stalled the reconstruction project for the last six years.

The section of road, which travels over the West Branch of the DuPage River, has been flooded at least three times during that time period, Spitz said.
