Wrap: Batavia baseball wins again; Descenza sets U.S. record
Batavia's baseball team improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the Western Sun Conference with a 4-2 win over DeKalb Wednesday.
In the fourth inning, Alex Sentman and Shane Holl knocked back-to-back doubles and both came around to score. Brian Krolikowski picked up his second win of the season for the Bulldogs (6-3, 3-1).
Yorkville 1, Geneva 0: The Foxes tallied the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Payne had 2 hits for Geneva (7-2, 2-2).
Kaneland 7, Glenbard South 3:ŒThe Knights took advantage of five Raider errors, and jumped out to 4-0 lead after the first inning and added three more in the third. Brian Claesson and Alex Norman both went 2-for-3 and Norman pitched a complete game for his second win.
St. Charles North 5, East Aurora 0: Sam Weinberg continued to spark the North Stars (6-3, 2-0) by getting 2 hits, stealing a base and scoring a run. Matt Stevens added a solo homer.
Women's swimming
Descenza sets record:ŒRosary graduate Mary Descenza set a new United States record in the 200 meter butterfly Wednesday on the opening day of the World Short-Course Championships in Manchester, England.
Descenza's new U.S. record time is 2:04.27.
"I'm so excited, I feel very emotional about the record," said Descenza.
Girls soccer
St. Charles East 3, Larkin 0: Rene Ruminski had a goal and an assist for the Saints (3-1, 2-0). Caren Bieschke and Tin Ralaan added the other goals.
West Aurora 1, Streamwood 0: The Blackhawks (7-0-1) won the West Aurora Tournament with tight victory over the Sabres. Rachel Rodriguez scored off a Madison Pickett assist. Michelle Castaneda made four saves for the shutout.
Boys tennis
St. Charles East 4, South Elgin 3: The Storm won all three singles matches, but the Saints swept four doubles matches to take the win. First doubles Sam Gunter and Kirk Nelson as well as second doubles Russ Reilly and Kevin Driessen won their doubles matches 6-0, 6-1. For the Storm, second singles Steve Battaglia took his match 6-0, 6-0.
Geneva 4, Marmion 3: The Vikings won two of three singles matches to take the win in Geneva. Pat Coveney and Wes Kappel won first doubles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 and David Ta and Collin Rapp won singles matches for Geneva. Chris Fowler won first singles for the Cadets 6-1, 6-3.
Women's softball
Aurora 2-5, Concordia (Ill.) 0-0:ŒThe Spartans have now won all nine of their NAC games this year and are 16-5 overall. In the opener, Anna Snyder hurled a 2-hit complete game, striking out 17 batters. In Game 2, Nicole Capone pitched 5 shutout innings before Snyder pitched the final 2 frames for her third save.
