Briefs: Vernon Hills park board vacancy
The deadline to apply for a vacancy on the Vernon Hills Park District board has been extended to early May. The board is looking to fill a recent vacancy created with the resignation of Kelli Garvanian, who had held the spot for 22 years. The term will be from the date of appointment until the April 2009 election. It will then be filled by election for a 2-year term. Arbor Day poster winner
Petty Elementary School fifth-grader Isabella Hoffman received first place in the state's Arbor Day poster contest. Isabella of Antioch will receive a T-shirt, books, poster and $50 gift card for Barnes and Noble. The theme of the contest was "Trees are Terrific…Inside and Out." Isabella's poster included things trees provide for people, animals and the environment, such as oxygen, beauty and medicine. Her poster will be sent to the national contest.
Fire board opening
The Lake Villa township board is looking for a person to fill the vacancy on the fire protection district board. The 3-year term begins May 1. Candidates must reside in Lake Villa Township; preference will be given Lindenhurst residents. Anyone interested in serving on the board should send their resume no later than April 18 to township Supervisor Dan Venturi, 37908 N. Fairfield Road, Lake Villa, IL 60046.
Check your child's seat
Lake Zurich Police Department's nationally certified child safety seat technicians will conduct free child safety-seat checks at the Lake Zurich Wal-Mart, 820 S. Rand Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3. Certified child-safety seat technicians will assist the department. Surveys reveal 90 percent of the child seats are improperly installed or not used at all. Children less than 80 pounds need to be protected in a properly installed child seat. For more information, call (847) 438-2349.
Got old electronics?
The Lake Zurich public works department and E-Scrap Technologies will host an electronics recycling event on May 3 at the public works facility, 505 Telser Road. Acceptable electronics include: computers, TVs, laptops, servers, circuit boards, monitors, video conferencing equipment, scanners, backup batteries, all cables, cordless phones, printers, toner cartridges, UPS, PC peripherals, and stereo speakers. E-Scrap Technologies will take most electronics devices for free. There is a $15 charge for each television and $5 for each CRT computer monitor. For more information, call (847) 540-1696.
Nominees sought
Lake Zurich Unit District 95 is now accepting nominations for the Gary W. Robillard Leadership Award and the Teachers Make a Difference Awards. The leadership award was created in 2007 to memorialize former school board President Gary Robillard, who died two days before being re-elected to a second term in April 2007. The deadline for submitting nominations for the Teachers Make a Difference Awards is today and April 15 for the Gary W. Robillard Leadership Award.
