Woman hit, injured by bus was drunk, police say
A woman injured when she was struck by a school bus in the parking lot of Cary-Grove High School Friday morning was drunk at the time of the accident, police said.
Cary police Sgt. Geoffrey Cooker said Betty Verschueren, 59, of McHenry, suffered head and neck injuries in the accident that happened at 6:50 a.m.
Verschueren, who was delivering snacks to the school, was cited for being an intoxicated pedestrian in the roadway, a petty offense, police said.
The Cary Fire Department took the woman to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington.
Police said none of the 27 students on the bus were injured.
No arrests are expected, but police are investigating. The school bus driver, Diana Lynn Avitia, 34, of Crystal Lake, was ticketed for failure to exercise due caution to a pedestrian, also a petty offense.
Cooker said the citation was necessary to test the driver for drugs and alcohol.
State law requires holders of commercial drivers licenses to submit a chemical test after an accident, police said.
