Townhouse elevator a top amenity

Going up? That's exactly what downsizers and other Kenar homeowners will be doing late this spring -- the projected opening date for the Courtyards of Glen Ellyn, a community of 24 Lincoln Park-like, two-story townhouses in downtown Glen Ellyn.

Residents will be riding their own private, in-home elevator, which is a special option that Kenar Homes is now making available at the Courtyards.

While its first of four buildings is only now being framed, the much-anticipated Courtyards has already generated a lot of news -- and the elevator announcement has done nothing but raise its visibility still further.

"People love the elevator option, particularly older downsizers," said Laura Johnson, Director of Sales and Marketing for Schaumburg-based Kenar. "They've lived in the area a long time, but want to stay provided they can find something more manageable and carefree. A Courtyards townhouse with private elevator offers exactly that. Now they don't have to worry about repeatedly climbing up and down stairs."

What else has made Courtyards so newsworthy and anticipated? The new in-fill community will offer three different floor plans and the kind of compact spaciousness usually associated with fashionable city living.

The two-story homes will stretch up to 2095 square feet with two or three bedroom suites, 2½ baths, formal dining rooms and breakfast areas, family rooms and great rooms, and two-car garages. They will look like city townhouses -- but won't be priced that way. The comparatively modest prices will range in the low to mid $400,000's.

The Courtyards will occupy the corner of Pennsylvania and Kenilworth Avenues in downtown Glen Ellyn -- and (for many buyers) that may be a key buying point.

The area is one of the last traditional downtowns remaining in the Chicago suburbs. It's home to more than 60 restaurants and bars, many of them highly rated and found only in Glen Ellyn. The area prominently features an art house movie theater that runs independent and foreign films as well as many small shops and boutiques that appeal to diverse, even quirky tastes.

But Courtyards won't take them too far away. In fact, residents will be within walking distance of a Metra commuter line that gives them quick and easy access to the benefits of downtown Chicago. The Union Pacific West Line runs to the Ogilvie Transportation Center in the Loop each day throughout the morning, afternoon, and evening hours.

"Easy access to transportation is one of the reasons we decided to put the new development here in Glen Ellyn," said Johnson.

While downsizers and empty nesters are flocking to the development, Johnson feels that it will also attract others.

"This will be the perfect location for younger professionals looking for a place that's smaller, convenient, and stylish."

Interested parties still can't visit a model of the Courtyards, but the style is there and plain to see.

"Now's a great time to stop by the sales office and see the progress of the community," said Johnson.
