Wings' Chelios helps Hawks get early jump
Credit Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios with getting the Blackhawks fired up in the first period Wednesday night.
Chelios' cross-checked Patrick Kane in the back behind the net at 4:34, giving the Hawks a two-man advantage. The first penalty expired, but Chelios was still in the penalty box when Cam Barker scored at 5:53 to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Barker's goal was the first of 3 by the Hawks in less than two minutes, and they went on to beat the Red Wings 6-2 at the United Center.
The referees gave the 46-year-old Chelios at least three free cross-checks on Kane's back before finally calling a penalty.
"I think Cheli was trying to get to his age," joked Hawks coach Denis Savard.
Kane couldn't believe the referees waited so long to call a penalty.
"If they weren't calling anything on him I figured I'd slash him back a couple times," Kane said. "I couldn't believe they weren't calling anything. It's good they got it at the end and it's good we got a goal out of it, too."
Chelios still managed to argue the call all the way to the penalty box.
"Cheli's a competitor; he comes to play every night," Savard said. "He'll learn that Kaner is a competitor, too."
Another first: Rookie defenseman Jordan Hendry became the eighth Hawks player to score his first NHL goal this season when he connected in the first period.
Others getting their first goal this season were Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Dave Bolland, Adam Burish, Jack Skille, Kris Versteeg and Jake Dowell.
Watch it live: The NHL draft lottery is Monday in New York and will be televised live on Versus and the NHL Network at 7 p.m.
The lottery is for the 14 clubs not making the playoffs. The Hawks won last year's lottery and selected Patrick Kane first overall, a stroke of good fortune that helped change the course of the franchise.
Tip-ins: Rene Bourque was a healthy scratch for the first time since Oct. 25 because Denis Savard wanted to get Yanic Perreault into the game. Bourque had appeared in 44 consecutive games. … The Red Wings were without injured regulars Tomas Holmstrom, Brad Stuart, Kris Draper and Mikael Samuelsson. … Detroit still needs 1 point (or for San Jose to lose) to clinch the President's Trophy given to the team with the best overall regular-season record.
