The airlines must fix the safety mess
Why and when does a congressperson inspect an airliner?
Fifty years ago, I was a maintenance captain on a jet fighter plane on an aircraft carrier.
That plane was not turned over to a pilot until every safety inspection was done and signed off by whatever department had jurisdiction over that part of the plane.
An incomplete log would never have been handed to a pilot.
It was my responsibility to review all departments for compliance before every flight.
Of course, I would be the first person disciplined, but so would my squadron commander.
Today's modern airline executives have only on thing in mind: When and how large is my annual bonus? Who cares about safe airplanes?
If the CEOs of Southwest, American, United and Delta airlines receive a bonus this year, after those airlines publicly stated safety issues, my commentary will be proven.
