Roselle auctioning off pool packages

The Roselle Park District has launched an online auction to celebrate the opening of its upcoming pool.

The auction, much similar to those on eBay, features anything from birthday party packages to a lifetime membership. Bidding started Tuesday and continues until May 16.

Proceeds will be used to help pay for last-minute enhancements for the pool at Kemmerling Park.

In 2006, voters approved a tax hike for a new pool and renovations at Kemmerling. Roselle hasn't had a community pool since the previous one closed in 2001.

The pool and enhancements, which cost roughly $5 million, has been one of the park district's largest projects in recent years.

If the weather cooperates, park officials expect the pool to be open Memorial Day weekend.

"We're pretty optimistic about it," said Heidi Lapin, Roselle parks director of recreation. "But if the weather doesn't cooperate, we have a plan B."

That means opening sometime during the first weekends in June, she said.

A few finishing touches still are needed before the project is complete. That includes landscaping, painting the pool, pouring concrete for the deck and work on the path around the park.

The park district started selling pool passes Tuesday. Anyone who buys a pass this month will receive the biggest discount. Passes will be available for a lesser discount next month. In June, passes will be sold at full price.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pool is scheduled for May 24.
