Lancers softball team hits cold spot

The College of Lake County softball team had what coach Sue Garcia described as a "rough and cold" weekend.

Playing in Kankakee on Saturday and Sunday, the Lancers suffered their first two losses of the season, dropping 2 of 3 games to fall to 10-2.

Nationally ranked Kankakee Community College defeated CLC 15-1 on Sunday, as Alyssa Wilson and Lauren Liles accounted for the Lancers' only hits.

"We didn't hit, but we were in the game and playing good defense until the sixth," Garcia said.

Kankakee led 3-0 before blowing the game open by scoring 12 runs in the sixth.

On Saturday, Lake County lost to Grand Rapids (Mich.) 7-1 and edged Waubonsee Community College 9-8.

Wilson and Liles also had the Lancers' only hits against Grand Rapids. Both hits were doubles.

Against Waubonsee, Jenna Capps went 3-for-3 with 4 runs scored and an RBI, while Kristina Zobrist was 3-for-3 with a double, 2 runs and 3 RBI. Liles doubled twice and knocked in 4 runs. Jamie Braden (2-0) picked up the win when CLC scored a run in the seventh.

"The top of the order hit the ball well and everyone put the ball in play," Garcia said.

Lake County was scheduled to begin Skyway Conference play Tuesday against McHenry and will play Moraine Valley on Thursday.

"Everyone's looking forward to conference and being able to play with some consistency," Garcia said. "We know we can play with anybody and we're going to make teams play with us."

CLC splits two matches: The Lancers upset Rock Valley, a Division III school, by a 5-4 final last Friday thanks to a win at No. 2 doubles from Jose Martin and Peter Colina, who prevailed 6-7, 7-5, 10-8.

Lake County's Dan Bland dominated at No. 2 singles, losing only one game. The Lancers also got wins from Steve Korzun (No. 5 singles), Ryan Schmitke (No. 6 singles), and the No. 3 doubles team of Korzun and Schmitke.

In its season opener last Thursday, CLC fell to Moriane Valley 5-4.

Warren graduates Andy Wright and Bland teamed up to win 7-5, 6-7, 10-8 at No. 1 doubles against what CLC coach Randy Malone called a "very good" Moraine Valley team.

Korzun and Schmitke won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, while the Martin/Colina duo captured a straight-set decision at No. 3 doubles.
