Vernon Hills wins twice
Vernon Hills wins twice: Playing in Louisville, Ky., as part of the Ballard Classic, Vernon Hills defeated Medinah (Ohio) 11-0 and Trinity Catholic (Ky.) 7-4 this week.
In their season opener against Medinah, Keith Kamman made his first varsity pitching start and threw 5 strong innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out four and walking one.
Zack Schwartz homered and drove in three runs, while Matt Peterson (2 RBI) and Brad Schnitzer (double, RBI) each had 2 hits. Mark Argianas contributed a single and 2 RBI. Nick Mazza (1-for-2, RBI) and P.J. Marsek (1-for-3, 2 runs) also chipped in offensively.
Against Trinity Catholic, which is ranked in the top 10 in Kentucky, Schnitzer allowed 1 run in 4 innings to earn the win.
Jamie Manhard pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief, and Schwartz earned the save by retiring all three hitters he faced.
Peterson's 3-run double sparked a 5-run third. Nate Moraton went 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Mike Tice was 2-for-3.
Libertyville 2-1 in Arizona: Senior lefty Jeff Jenkins rebounded from a tough start as Libertyville won the final game of its Arizona trip Thursday night 5-2 over Bradshaw Mountain.
Jenkins gave up 2 runs in the first but went 5 innings for the victory. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.
Brooks McDowell went the final 2 innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts, for the save.
Jeremy Butler (2 RBI), Louis Educate (RBI) and Chase Guarnaccio (RBI) each had 2 hits for Libertyville.
