Will anyone address our real problems?
Contrary to letter writer John Skaritka, Bill Foster deserves a heap of praise. We need more intellect in government.
Nothing positive came from the Jim Oberweis campaign about how he would fix the current mess. It was just more of the same.
Another writer who wrote that the GOP must forget the present has some good points, but he forgets that it was the chokehold of the GOP and team of George Bush, Dick Cheney, Dennis Hastert and Tom DeLay that brought us to this low point.
Seventy percent of Americans will never forget. We're in a war we can't win. Over 150,000 Iraqis and 4,000 Americans are dead and thousands more injured and crippled for life.
Perhaps if our soldiers were here, securing our borders, we wouldn't have an invasion of illegal aliens. If the INS was properly funded and did their job, terrorists wouldn't be training in this country. We wouldn't need to spy on people in this country or usurp their constitutional rights.
The economy wouldn't be sliding into the toilet and health care and education might be better accessible for all. The mission of the Republican regime to support big business at the expense of the majority of the country has resulted in the loss of jobs and health care and a deterioration of education and infrastructure, and the greatest debt we've ever known.
Our lives and health are being risked for cheap imported products while our jobs are outsourced to foreign countries for pennies on the dollar. College is becoming only a dream as the rising cost makes it an unaffordable luxury for too many. Mortgage companies took advantage of individuals who never should have received the loans they were given, all in an effort to make millions for CEOs while their companies now suffer billions in losses.
We should bail out Bear Stearns, but bailing out individuals is a "moral hazard?"
Something is seriously wrong with this type of thinking.
Republicans would do better to remember the present, lament their folly and realize that supporting the rich few at the expense of everything that really matters is doomed to failure.
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton also need to wake up and focus on the issues before they find themselves in second- and third place in the presidential race.
Obama preaches change and hope but really has accomplished nothing in his political career except to move from one office to another.
What office will he run for if elected president? He'll actually have to perform, rather than just voting "present" like he did repeatedly in Springfield.
The time for platitudes and preaching is past. Anybody can pick up a phone in the middle of the night.
How are we going to fix the real problems this country is facing?
