Explosion, fire displace family

An explosion and fire Friday evening damaged a home near Mundelein.

Firefighters called to 28712 Lemon Road about 6:30 p.m. found light smoke coming from the home. The Mundelein, Libertyville, Wauconda, Grayslake, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods departments also responded to a call that a house had exploded.

Three residents, an adult and two children were at home at the time, said Capt. Brian Garrity of the Countryside Fire Protection District.

"They described it as an explosion and they heard the floor shake," he said. "Neighbors in the area heard it."

The fire was contained to the basement area. No damage estimate was available. One occupant was treated at the scene for difficulty breathing and a minor hand injury, Garrity said.

"It does not appear to be related to natural gas," he said. "It was either something that was stored in the home or some equipment."

The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. The family was lodged at a local hotel, and some dogs that had been outside the home in back were also placed elsewhere.

Countryside and state fire investigators remained at the scene late Friday.
